Purpose

Why Big Blue Bridge Exist

Most kids who spend their lives in the ocean grew up in families who already did. Parents surf, so their kids surf. Swim lessons at four, boats at six, and the water never feels like a stranger.

Big Blue Bridge is for every kid who didn't get that. We start in a pool, with instructors who have taught a lot of nervous beginners, and we work toward the day the ocean stops being intimidating and starts being theirs.

Program Overview

Swimming is a safety issue before it's a sport

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1–4.

Water safety risks are not distributed evenly. Living minutes from the Pacific and not knowing how to swim isn't a missed opportunity — it's a risk, and the families least likely to have grown up swimming are the ones who most often live closest to the water.

Methodology

Two problems, one program

There are two separate things going wrong, and most organizations only work on one of them. The first is swimmability — kids who can't swim, in a county defined by its coastline. The second is disconnection — kids who have never had a reason to care about the ocean, because nothing about it was ever theirs.

Treating those separately doesn't work. Big Blue Bridge does both at once: the skills to be safe in the water, and the relationship that makes a kid want to be in it.
